Tourism Authority of Thailand reassures tourists

TOURISM Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Suraphon Svetasreni has reiterated that many of the tourist areas remain unaffected. Addressing a packed gathering at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand, Svetasreni said: “We are counting on our 25 offices abroad to give the right information about the flood situation in Thailand. The most important thing to clarify to all international tourists,” he said, “is that the Suvaranabhumi International Airport is open and will remain so. There’s no flooding on the highways and there’s transport from the airport to the city, including taxis, buses, overhead Rail Link. It’s only the domestic Don Muang Airport that has been closed.” Suvaranabhumi Airport, he said, had enough flood-protecting measures in place and continued to have 120 airlines operating out of it, with 800 flights a day. A Tourist Assistance Centre had been set up on the 3rd floor of the Airport Rail Link’s Makkasan station to facilitate tourists’ transport from the hotels to the airport, with the hotels making arrangements for transport to this station. TAT has also activated a Tourism Intelligence Unit and Crisis Management Centre to co-ordinate all information on the floods, and release daily situation updates on the web site www.thailandtourismupdate.com .

The said the flood-hit spots in Bangkok were mostly the residential areas, which did not affect tourists. Except for the Grand Palace area, all the popular tourist areas like Siam, Sukhumvit, Silom, and Khao Sam Road were totally flood-free. Again, although some parts Bangkok were flood-hit, all the places around it were unaffected, like Kanchanburi, the beaches of Pattaya, Huahin, Koh Samet, and Koh Chang. This also applies to the popular southern beaches of Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and the northern towns of Chiangmai and Chiangrai. He said many meetings and trade shows had been postponed - not cancelled. These included seven international trade shows.

Meanwhile TAT has designed a five-pronged strategy to rebuild domestic tourism after the severe flooding. Thawatchai Arunyik, deputy governor for domestic marketing, said the first measure, intra-regional travel, was set to start this week and run until the end of January. People will be encouraged to visit nearby attractions rather than go across regions, something that would continue to augment business in communities. The authority will not focus on already crowded destinations such as Pattaya, Hua Hin and Kanchanaburi. Four plans are set for next year, by when the flooding will have completely disappeared. It will begin with cross-region travel by encouraging people from all parts of the country to visit the Central region and Bangkok. TAT later will boost niche markets like medical and corporate tourism in unaffected regions, particularly the northeast. The plan is expected to start in January. TAT plans to spend Bt70 million on the strategy. All 35 TAT offices nationwide are involved in the preparations.

Simplified tax refunds for tourists

Travellers to Singapore can now reclaim tax on their shopping easier through a new partnership with Global Blue and the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS).

A new Electronic Tourist Refund Scheme (eTRS) will facilitate tax rebates for airline passengers and retailers.

The electronic government service tax (GST) refund system links up multiple Central Refund Agencies and independent retailers on a common platform to provide foreign travellers with automated GST refunds.

International shoppers can choose a credit card to which all their purchase details will be tagged automatically. They will then have to present it at the eTRS self-help kiosk at the airport and receive GST refund directly credited into the same credit card account. As opposed to the previous system, the electronic end-to-end system does not require retailers and customers to fill out tax refund forms.

European Union adopts new rules on body scanners

THE European Union (EU) has adopted new guidelines on the use of security scanners at airports to protect the privacy and health of passengers, the Economic Times reports.

Under the new law, adopted on Monday, EU member states are not obliged to deploy body scanners but if they do, these will have to comply with EU-level standards, Xinhua reported. Security scanners must not store or copy images and the security personnel analyzing images should work in a separate location. In addition, passengers must be informed and be given the right to choose an alternative method of screening. To protect citizens' health and safety, only security scanners that do not use X-ray technology can be used at EU airports.
